Jackson bought this blank deck for me to paint (43"x 9")...our new hobby of personalizing our skateboard quiver. All said and done, I wanted something feminine but tough, something to be respected in our little gang of all boy skateboarders :))) (w'd up Peggy Oki)
This was the result. Matadora (2009)
I didn't think it was worthy enough for preservation/display (despite the hi-gloss lacquer), so she's getting all new trucks, wheels and grip tape tomorrow.
What makes this (a little) more badass is that after titling it "Matadora," I attempted to spell check the spanish to english and simply put she's a: Murderess
maryn that's awesome. i really like that. did i mention that your deck art is totally sweet? after reading what you had to say regarding your intent, i gotta say you really hit it on the head with your concept and title. from what I know about spanish bullfights, the "matador" (always a man, and linguistically the word is masculine as well) shows up to battle adorned with a sparkly, brightly colored skin tight outfit and prances around the ring. the bull, representing nature, is almost always defeated, stabbed to death. in this way the matador, both masculine and feminine at the same time, symbolizes the best qualities of both genders, which are necessary to overcome the harshness of the natural world...
ReplyDeleteprops. that shit is effin rad.
correction: def not always a man. there have been many famous female bullfighters. traditionally they were men. there is another word for bullfighter, "torero" which has a feminine counterpart, "torera", but the word "matador" is still always masculine (officially), which further makes your deck hot as shit. but you probably knew all that... :)
